Action representations and the semantics of verbs
نویسنده
چکیده
This thesis investigates how the syntactical behavior as well as the semantics of verbs can be grounded in the cognitive architecture responsible for action representations. Psychological research on action representation in the human brain is discussed. Based on this, a composite conceptual space for action representation is formalized to model as closely as possible human action representation, including both motor patterns and intentions. A modular conceptual space logic is introduced to denote action concepts in a natural way. Using this logic, the manner-result dichotomy in verb meaning, the aspectual structure in event descriptions and the special status of modal verbs are shown to be explicable in terms of the model described. Throughout the thesis, the computability of the model is taken into account for future implementation, e.g. in robotics. Various valuable suggestions for further research are given.

Lexical Semantics and Selection of TAM in Bantu Languages: A Case of Semantic Classification of Kiswahili Verbs
The existing literature on Bantu verbal semantics demonstrated that inherent semantic content of verbs pairs directly with the selection of tense, aspect and modality formatives in Bantu languages like Chasu, Lucazi, Lusamia, and Shiyeyi. Thus, the gist of this paper is the articulation of semantic classification of verbs in Kiswahili based on the selection of TAM types. This is because the sem...
متن کاملThe role of Persian causative markers in the acquisition of English causative verbs
This project investigates the relationship between lexical semantics and causative morphology in the acquisition of causative/inchoative-related verbs in English as a foreign language by Iranian speakers. Results of translation and picture judgment task show although L2 learners have largely acquired the correct lexico-syntactic classification of verbs in English, they were constrained by ...
متن کاملDeveloping a Semantic Similarity Judgment Test for Persian Action Verbs and Non-action Nouns in Patients With Brain Injury and Determining its Content Validity
Objective: Brain trauma evidences suggest that the two grammatical categories of noun and verb are processed in different regions of the brain due to differences in the complexity of grammatical and semantic information processing. Studies have shown that the verbs belonging to different semantic categories lead to neural activity in different areas of the brain, and action verb processing is r...
متن کاملGraded Modality-Specific Specialization in Semantics: A Computational Account of Optic Aphasia
A distributed connectionist model of semantics is presented in which semantic representations develop under the pressure of learning to mediate between multiple input and output modalities in performing various tasks. The system has a topographic bias on learning that favors short connections, leading to a graded degree of modality-specific functional specialization within semantics. The approa...
متن کاملMeaningfulness of Religious Language in the Light of Conceptual Metaphorical Use of Image Schema: A Cognitive Semantic Approach
According to modern religious studies, religions are rooted in certain metaphorical representations, so they are metaphorical in nature. This article aims to show, first, how conceptual metaphors employ image schemas to make our language meaningful, and then to assert that image-schematic structure of religious expressions, by which religious metaphors conceptualize abstract meanings, is the ba...
